Guided by the spirit of exploration and the warmth of camaraderie, we traversed iconic cities, quaint villages, and majestic mountains, each day unveiling a new chapter in our European odyssey.
Day 1: Arrival in Bern – The Heartbeat of Switzerland
Our journey commenced in Bern, Switzerland’s captivating capital. Wandering through its UNESCO-listed Old Town, we were enchanted by the medieval architecture, the iconic Zytglogge clock tower, and the serene banks of the Aare River. The city’s blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy set the perfect tone for our adventure.
Day 2: Lucerne – A Symphony of Snow and Serenity
A scenic drive led us to Lucerne, where the unexpected gift of a three-foot snowfall transformed Mt. Pilatus into a winter wonderland. Ascending via gondola, we were greeted by panoramic views that words can scarcely capture. The Lion Monument, a poignant tribute to Swiss Guards, and the historic Kapellbrücke bridge added layers of depth to our exploration.
Day 3: From Bern to Innsbruck – Crossing Borders and Embracing Cultures
Departing Bern, we journeyed through the Alps, making a whimsical stop in Liechtenstein for a passport stamp and a nod to childhood memories of Bugs Bunny and Leopold von Liechtenstein. Navigating the Arlberg Pass amidst a surprise September snowstorm, we marveled at the alpine beauty before arriving in Innsbruck, Austria. A hearty lunch featuring local delicacies, including a surprisingly delightful liver dumpling soup, warmed our spirits.
Day 4: Innsbruck – A Dance of Clouds and Culture
Innsbruck greeted us with its majestic mountains playing peek-a-boo through the clouds. Our walking tour unveiled the city’s rich tapestry of history, from the grandeur of the Imperial Palace to the modern marvel of the Bergisel Ski Jump. The evening offered a chance to relax and reflect, savoring local cuisine and the city’s enchanting ambiance.
Day 5: Salzburg – Following the Sound of Music
Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the backdrop for “The Sound of Music,” welcomed us with open arms. Exploring Mirabell Gardens, we couldn’t resist reenacting scenes from the beloved film. Day 6: Seefeld and Serendipity – Embracing the Unexpected
A train ride transported us to Seefeld, a charming alpine village known for its Olympic legacy and picturesque landscapes. A horse-drawn carriage ride, complete with a warming shot of schnapps, offered a fairy-tale experience. Back in Innsbruck, a chance encounter with a young couple led to a heartfelt conversation about love, travel, and the beauty of human connection.
Day 7: Linderhof Palace and Oberammergau – Stepping into History
Venturing into Bavaria, we explored Linderhof Palace, King Ludwig II’s opulent retreat inspired by Versailles. The palace’s intricate architecture and lush gardens spoke volumes of the king’s artistic vision. In Oberammergau, renowned for its decennial Passion Play, we delved into centuries-old traditions and admired the town’s exquisite woodcarvings and frescoes.
Day 8: Ettal Abbey and Farewell Feasts
Our penultimate day led us to Ettal Abbey, a majestic Benedictine monastery nestled amidst the Alps. Touring its ornate basilica and savoring the monastery’s own brewed beer offered a blend of spiritual and sensory delight. Returning to Innsbruck, we gathered for a farewell dinner, sharing stories, laughter, and gratitude for the journey shared.
