New Airline Travel Rules Every Traveler Should Know Before Their Summer Vacation!

For many travelers, packing for a trip has become second nature: passport… charger… medications… comfy shoes… and maybe a snack hidden somewhere in the carry-on like a seasoned traveler ninja.

But there’s a new travel rule that’s catching many people off guard — especially travelers who only fly once or twice a year.

And honestly? It’s an important one.

The Big Change:

Portable Chargers Can NOT Go In Checked Bags

If you travel with:

  • a portable phone charger

  • a power bank

  • extra lithium batteries

  • rechargeable battery packs

…those items now need to stay in your carry-on luggage ONLY.

Do NOT pack them in your checked suitcase.

That includes:

  • portable chargers

  • charging cases

  • spare laptop batteries

  • camera batteries

  • rechargeable battery packs

The reason is safety.

Airlines and the FAA are concerned about lithium batteries overheating and potentially causing fires in the cargo hold of an airplane. Flight crews can respond quickly to a problem in the cabin — but not underneath the plane in checked baggage. (Federal Aviation Administration)

The Simple Rule to Remember

Here’s the easiest way to think about it: If it CHARGES something…

Keep it with you.

Carry-on? YES.

Checked luggage? NO.

That little portable charger you bought for a long airport day? Keep it in your backpack or purse.

A Few Other Easy-to-Forget Travel Rules

While we’re here, a few reminders for occasional travelers:

Liquids Still Follow the 3-1-1 Rule

In carry-ons:

  • liquids must be 3.4 ounces or smaller

  • All containers must fit in one quart-size clear bag

That giant shampoo bottle from Costco?TSA still isn’t emotionally prepared for it. 😄

Vapes & E-Cigarettes Must Stay With You

These also contain lithium batteries and cannot go into checked luggage.

Gate-Checking a Carry-On?

Take the Charger Out First

This is the part many travelers miss.

If the airline forces you to gate-check your carry-on bag:

  • remove your portable charger

  • remove spare batteries

  • keep them with you in the cabin

Very important.

Why This Matters for Our Travelers

Many travelers in our Lindsey Adventures family take 1–3 trips per year, not 30. And travel rules seem to change every time we turn around.

That’s why we always try to simplify things into plain English:

Your “Safe Packing” Checklist

Before heading to the airport:

✔ Portable chargers → carry-on

✔ Medications → carry-on

✔ Passport/documents → carry-on

✔ One change of clothes → carry-on

✔ Expensive electronics → carry-on

If losing it would ruin your trip…don’t check it.

Final Thought

Travel should feel exciting — not stressful.

Most of these new rules are designed to make flying safer for everyone, and thankfully, this one is pretty easy to follow once you know it.

So before your next adventure: take 30 seconds and double-check where your portable charger is packed.

Nobody wants their vacation delayed over a battery pack sitting beside their flip-flops in checked luggage.

And as always at Lindsey Adventures…

You may travel solo…but you never travel alone. ✈️
