If you’ve got flights going through Newark Liberty Airport (EWR) this year — especially if you’re traveling with us on one of our upcoming Lindsey Adventures — here’s a friendly heads-up.
🛠️ Runway construction, ✋ air traffic controller shortages, and even a ⚠️ recent radar outage have created some real headaches at Newark over the past few weeks. Thousands of travelers have experienced long delays and sudden cancellations — not fun.
Here’s what’s happening and how to be prepared:

🚧 What’s Going On at Newark?
One of Newark’s runways is closed for major repairs (through fall), which means fewer planes can take off and land.
The FAA is dealing with staffing shortages for air traffic control — a big issue that’s backing up flights across the Northeast.
On top of that, a recent technical failure knocked out radar for 90 seconds — and in air traffic control, that’s a lifetime. 😬
🕑 What Does That Mean for You?
Expect longer delays — 1 to 2 hours isn’t unusual.
As many as 2,800+ flights were delayed in just one week.
Airlines like United are offering travel waivers, so you can change plans without fees.
✅ Here’s How to Handle It Like a Pro:
🛬 Look at Alternate Airports
JFK and LaGuardia are solid alternatives, depending on your route.
They’re also easier to reach from Manhattan if you’re spending time there.
📲 Stay Updated
Sign up for airline alerts.
Check your flight status often — delays may not be posted until the day of.
🧳 Arrive Early & Be Flexible
Give yourself plenty of cushion, especially for international connections.
Have a Plan B, especially if your route includes Newark.
💡 Pro Tip: If you’re booking soon, check to see if you can route through a different airport to avoid the mess altogether.
🚀 The good news? The Department of Transportation is finally moving forward with a major upgrade to the air traffic system, set to be complete by 2028. Until then… pack a little extra patience.
We’ll continue to keep you posted as we get closer to our next group adventures — and if you need help adjusting a flight or looking at alternatives, just reach out. We’ve got your back.
