Coolcations: The Chill Way to Beat Summer Heat

Coolcations: The Chill Travel Trend That’s Heating Up

Deanna and I first floated this idea two years ago on 10 Min-Travel Tuesday, our weekly travel podcast—why not beat the summer scorch by heading somewhere cool?

Turns out, the world has caught on. “Coolcations” are now the buzzy new travel trend, and they’re exactly what they sound like: swapping sweaty, crowded beach towns for refreshing, cooler-climate escapes.

What Exactly Is a Coolcation?

Travel expert Alice Ford told Scripps News these trips are all about visiting cooler regions of the world. Top picks include:

  • Iceland – Rugged landscapes, glaciers, and endless ways to explore (campervan or guided tour).

  • Denmark & Estonia – Charming old towns with just-right summer temps.

  • Norway – Majestic fjords and crisp mountain air.

  • Canadian Rockies – Still relatively undiscovered, perfect for getting away with majestic beauty and wildlife, while staying closer to home and USA.

  • Alaska – Epic U.S. option with glaciers, wildlife, and wide-open space.

Why Coolcations Are Trending

More travelers are avoiding extreme heat and seeking milder summers:

  • Northern destinations booming – Bookings to places like Norway and Iceland are up double-digits.

  • Better comfort – Mild temps mean more time outdoors without overheating.

  • Fewer crowds – Cooler regions often see less peak-season congestion.

  • Sustainable travel focus – Certifications like Green Key, Green Globe, and EarthCheck help travelers choose eco-friendly stays.

Coolcations Require a Little More Planning

To get the best results:

  • Book flights and hotels early—these “hidden gems” are filling faster each year.

  • Pack for layering; cool mornings can turn into sunny afternoons.

  • If you’re heading north in midsummer, remember the midnight sun—pack an eye mask.

  • Research activities ahead—many outdoor adventures require reservations.

Or Let Us Do That With Our Next Coolcation: Canadian Rockies & Glacier National Park

We’re putting our own coolcation twist into action July 31–August 6, 2026, with a group trip through the Canadian Rockies and Glacier National Park.Think turquoise lakes, icefields, and mountain passes that will take your breath away—without the summer swelter.👉 See trip details here.

Bottom line: Coolcations aren’t just a passing fad—they’re the perfect way to enjoy summer without the sweat. Whether it’s going to Diamond Beach in Iceland (which we are also doing in 2026) kayaking along an Arctic fjord, or hiking the Rockies with us next summer, it’s time to start planning your escape to somewhere cool.
